Okay, I'll add to this post over time as more questions are asked, but to start it off I'll just clear up some misconceptions (both IC and OOC related):

Population:
There are approx. 30 NPCs in Juras, so that's around 10 to 15 families. There are appox. 60 NPCs in New Vir, which is around 20 - 30 families. The racial spread of NPCs is roughly equal, with a slight bias towards human.

NPC interaction:
As part of the efforts to revive the game, and following suggestions made at the meeting some months ago, we took specific measures to remove the influence of NPCs from the game world, to allow PCs to become more important. In Telantha, regardless of the power of a single, or group of PCs if their goals conflicted with the goals of the NPC population, or worse the Emperor, then there was no conceivable way for the PCs to succeed as the weight of numbers alone meant the NPCs could win any sort of conflict, especially if the guards were involved.

For example if a group of PCs made a camp in the woods to opperate as bandits, attacking PCs who tried to cross the forest, then realistically once enough people had complained to NPC officials it would be out of character for the guards not to be tasked with dealing with the menace, and aside from us drawing out any conflict--perhaps by having the guards send a small group out to investigate first, then when they didn't come back, a larger one, then if that didn't come back, a full squad of well trained soldiers--the results were already written in stone. The conclusion could be drawn out, but ultimately the final outcome would be obvious.

As such, with Telantha in ruins and the guard stressed to their maximum with dealing with the demons to the north and south, and with the available NPC populations reduced to a handful of serf families, the influence of NPCs is a non-issue at this point. These serfs will follow whatever organised lead is available in each region, if that entity is cruel and vicious, then the atmosphere in the region will be bleak and full of fear, if the rulers are kind and benevolent then the atmosphere will be brighter and you might hear a serf whistling a merry tune on the way to their days labours (but they'll still be living in the shadow of a ruined world, so don't expect everything to be rainbows and sunshine).

If a coded MOB / NPC (shown in dark purple text) isn't in a room, then assume that the room has no NPCs at all in it. Regardless of the time of day. If staff decide there is a population in a room we will echo this to any players there, and spawn NPCs that can be interacted with in most cases. Otherwise, the vNPCs (virtual non-player characters) keep to themselves, either working or spending time with their families and tending to their own needs.

Serfs will work for whatever leader exists, they will only work in the capacity of serfs tending the land, so they will gather resources fitting for the area. It is assumed that the initial serfs who fled Telantha banded together and built themselves housing, further serf families would need to be provided with housing in order to attract any of the survivors who were evacuated to the old Skrell village, and while these houses wont be built areas that PCs can explore, the resources for building the houses will need to be gathered and spent by the ruler (the staff will keep information on how many houses and how many families live in each area.) It is assumed these serfs will toil for the ruler in return for their homes and the right to tend to their needs as best they can using the avaialble resources in the surrounding area. Thus serfs in New Vir likely hunt game in the forest or fish from the lake, satisfying any needs they have without having to pay any 'rent' to the lord of those lands, and in return will spend the rest of their time gathering resources the lord dictates and depositing them in his warehouses. The serfs in Juras likely farm goats from the local herds.

Serfs will -not- perform any other task outside of resource gathering, that includes performing skilled crafts (such as blacksmiths) or guard duty, or any sort of fighting. They will not rise up to defend the village nor will they rebel against a cruel master. It is assumed if calamity befalls either village the serfs will either scatter and head to the other, or they'll die. This supports the concept of placing power in the hands of the players, not the nameless/faceless masses who through simple force of numbers would otherwise be able to overpower even the most powerful overlord. Again, I'll stress the serfs will perform no other task than gathering for their ruler, regardless the situation, and the conditions they are forced to work under will be reflected in rumours and likely the sort of events that staff run in the areas. So no PC can expect to use the vNPCs to win a battle against other PCs by simply trying to spread rumours about "He's a horrible murderer" or "She's actually a giant lizard." or "They're all Vek," or even "Do it or I'll burn your houses, eat your babies, then rape your ferrets."

(Wow, that was a long explanation, sorry for that but I felt I needed to make the point clear.)


The current state of Juras:
Currently Juras is in a state of uncertainty. There's no leadership so people mill about trying the best they can simply to survive, there was recently great concern over bandits, though the gossip was greatly exagerated outside of the town, but certainly life was gloomy and frightening at most times. However while the problem with bandits hasn't gone away, it has become less rife, but generally the feel of the area remains quite depressed and uncertain. Especially with the recent acts of murder/vigilantism (depending on your view point) and the caulbear attacks. There is no recognised authority in Juras yet and as such the serfs simply tend to their own needs.

The NPCs in Juras are not starving, though they are certainly on the low end of the standards of living. They have enough food to live, but not so much that they don't go hungry, and sometimes parents are forced to miss a meal or two to ensure that their children don't have to. Starvation is a concern, but for the time being not likely.

Populations in the rest of the world:

It's entirely uncertain how many other people survived, but it's widely known the majority of people from Telantha were evacuated to the village situated on an island in the middle of the lake directly to the west, as this was the most defensible position. By 'chance' all PCs happened to be evacuated to the south, instead, and thus split between Juras and New Vir. It's assumed a few thousand people were evacuated in total, that is all.

Contact has been lost with New Vir. The population of this town is currently unknown.

Due to VNPCs leaving New Vir and evacuating Juras, the population of Juras can be considered to be near 0. The population of Aden's Well is at approximately 80 VNPCs.

There are certain areas of Aden's Well in which this does not apply: The Mess hall and the public barracks will almost always have VNPCs present within them. You may safely assume that you are not alone in these locations.

VNPC guards are present within the walls of Aden's Well. They typically serve as archers, protecting the walls against VNPC demons. Demons that get inside the walls, and NPC demons outside the walls MUST be dealt with by PCs. If the PCs do not deal with internal threats, VNPCs will be killed and the population will fall. If all the VNPCs are dead, the PCs will face a much harder time in the game, as they will be expected to do all the work in the outpost themselves. Demon threats will likely also increase, as there will be no "VNPC protection" for the PCs to keep the demon populations down.

The current state of Juras:
Juras has fallen. The remaining VNPCs have evacuated to Aden's Well.

The current state of New Vir:
New Vir had its gates sealed, and nobody has heard anything from them in a while. There are many theories as to what is happening with them, but it is safe to assume that you will not hear anything from this town in quite some time, if ever.

What are the current goals for the PCs?
This is handled in the game through RP. In general, the PCs will likely be seeking out ways to sustain their existence and protect themselves from the dangers of the world.

Can I Leave Aden's Well?
The gates have been sealed, and will not be opened without order of the commander due to the risks to the entire town if the gates are opened. Even if you did leave, you will be alone in the world and likely would not survive long.

What's this about having a job?
It was decided that all the player characters must have a job within Aden's Well. This is to give all the PCs a purpose and clearly defined role. If your character takes on a position, but fails to do it, then the lack of contribution will negatively effect the town. Inversely, if you are dedicated to doing your duty and have your PC contribute on a regular basis, the town's situation will improve in that area.

For instance, if you are a farmer and let the fields be neglected, then there will be a food shortage. If you diligently tend the fields and make sure that the town has an ample supply of food, more food options will become available.

I don't like the current commander!
The commander of the outpost was given to a PC because it makes changes in leadership a far easier proposition. If you decide his leadership isn't for your character, you may plot against him and attempt to take control. All of this must be handled ICly, and (other than breaches of rules) the staff will not interfere in your plans.

I took a job, but I can't do it because there isn't anywhere to get the tools!
Please contact the staff and they will provide you with the proper equipment. It is assumed that there is a small supply of tools and weapons available in the outpost, and therefore these can be provided with you. You will not get tools replaced if you have already been issued them-- you will have to deal with their loss ICly.

I heard other players had weapons and armor given to them. Why can't I get equipped?
Weapons and armor were issued to those who took a job as a soldier. Due to the lack of supplies and equipment in Aden's Well, once the equipment runs out, we will not issue any more to PCs until a PC has restocked it. This makes smiths and leather workers particularly important, as armor will be damaged and eventually fail, and new weapons will not be available until more have been restocked.
